Part of the vast Paradiski ski area, Les Arcs ski resort brings together seven villages located at different altitudes (Arc 2000, Arc 1950, Arc 1800, Arc 1600 & Bourg-Saint-Maurice). The original village, Arc 1600, is small and family-friendly, with easy access to the slopes and the funicular from Bourg Saint Maurice. Arc 1800 is the largest and liveliest of the four villages, making it popular with younger visitors and groups.
Built in the early 2000s, Arc 1950 is the most modern and charming of the four, offering a chalet-style atmosphere. It’s pedestrian-only, which adds to its peaceful vibe, and has a selection of excellent restaurants and bars. The highest of the villages, sitting at over 2,100m, Arc 2000 is quieter and offers direct access to some of the most challenging slopes.
Each village offers something different, but for convenience, we recommend staying in Arc 1800. From here, a single lift takes you to Col de la Chal, where one run gets you to the Aiguille Rouge lifts or Plan-Peisey. It also has the best amenities, notably the excellent Mille 8 complex. This leisure area includes a pool and spa, three ski sections dedicated to different levels of ability, and a purpose-built luge run.
Les Arcs consists of five villages, scattered across the ski area, and none provides the kind of busy, buzzy hub you’ll find in Val Thorens and the like. But if nightlife isn’t a priority, and you and your party love skiing broad, intermediate pistes, it deserves a place on your shortlist.

With lots of snow-sure runs over 2,000m, Les Arcs has good snow reliability and a slick lift system. Les Arcs offers an incredibly diverse range of terrain, suitable for all skill levels. With 200km of slopes, you’ll find everything from wide-open, gentle blues to steep, ungroomed black runs.
Each of Les Arcs' resort villages has its own local slopes which are linked to the others. Arc 1600 and Arc 1800 have dedicated beginner zones and plenty of wide, gentle blue slopes for learning and building confidence.
Les Arcs is a paradise for intermediate skiers. The long, wide blue runs, such as Vallée de l’Arc from Arc 1950 and Renard from Peisey-Vallandry, are perfect for cruising. For experts, Arc 2000 is where you’ll find the resort's steepest terrain. The ungroomed black runs and off-piste options from the Aiguille Rouge cable car are challenging and exhilarating.
If you’re looking for a full day out, take the double-decker Vanoise Express cable car from Plan Peisey to La Plagne, where you’ll have access to another 225 km of slopes. The combined Paradiski area is one of the largest in the world, making it perfect for advanced skiers who want to cover a lot of ground.
How to get to Les Arcs
The closest major airport is Geneva, about 2.5 hours away by car, with regular transfers available. Lyon and Chambéry airports are also good options, with a range of shuttle services to the resort.
If you prefer to take the train, Bourg-Saint-Maurice is the nearest station, just a short funicular ride from Les Arcs 1600, which provides direct access to the resort. If you are considering driving, Les Arcs is around 10 hours from Calais, with well-maintained roads leading to the resort, though winter tyres or snow chains are essential. Once you arrive, Les Arcs is entirely traffic-free, adding to its appeal as a ski destination.
