The snowiest week in Tignes is in the first week of March so if you are looking for fresh powder then this high-altitude resort is for you. Nowhere in the Alps has quite the extent and variety of high-altitude skiing as Tignes, whose ski area is linked to Val d’Isere’s. The quality of snow is usually excellent above mid-stations in March although with spring on its way, you can expect some of the home runs to get a little tricky.

Boarders should take note too, as in mid-March, Tignes plays host to Mountain Shaker, a week-long festival dedicated to board culture. Events include the Freeride World Qualifier, Freeride Junior Tour, FISE Xperience Series and the Slopestyle World Cup. Plus there’s action in the indoor skatepark and a village zone for anyone looking to listen to DJs and soak up the atmosphere.

Also receiving the most snow in March, Chamonix gets regular snowfall at this time of year - on average nine days - and temperatures still dip below freezing at night to freshen it up. The best snow can be found at Les Grands Montets above Argentière. This end of the valley is naturally snowier than the Chamonix end with Le Tour claiming to be the snowiest village in France. With the ski area reaching over 3,000m you can be pretty sure to find decent snow here at this time of year.

March can also be considered Chamonix’s party month with the biggest night taking place on St Patrick’s Day on 17th March. Expect green beer, Irish-themed nights, fancy dress and plenty of live music. Another event taking place during the month of March is La Trace des Grands Ski Touring. Kicking off at Les Grands Montets, the festival promises a ski touring race, a ski mountaineering course and a festival village giving you the chance to test equipment, train with avalanche kit and learn more about ski touring.

Whilst conditions in Alta Badia can be variable in March, snowmaking and piste maintenance is state of the art. On-piste, snow cover is therefore very reliable late in the season. Arraba in particular is ideal for both nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts during March. The village and its ski lifts can be found not far from the Dolomites’ highest peak at 3,343m. It is also well-located for accessing other resorts on the Sella Ronda circuit such as Corvara and Colfosco.

Whilst the sun tends to make more of an appearance at this time of year, it does mean that the Dolomites in March are ideal for enjoying long lunches on a sunny terrace and lively apres-ski sessions.
